Canada’s path to the 2022 World Cup is shaping up

NEWCASTLE, England – Tammy Abraham scored in her third consecutive club game as Chelsea beat Newcastle 2-0 on Saturday to stay among the leaders in the English Premier League

Chelsea took the lead in the 10th minute when Federico Fernandez kicked the ball into his own net, and the goal was given despite Fernandez’s protests that he was pushed when Mason Mount’s low cross entered

Timo Werner had an unsuccessful day in front of goal, missing once after getting behind defense and seeing another effort ruled out for offside The German had more success as a supplier, however, dribbling past his own two Newcastle defenders before preparing Abraham for a first single for the 65th second goal. This earned Werner praise from manager Frank Lampard

“He had a few chances and sometimes it didn’t suit you, but I thought he was a real threat to us all along,” Lampard said

“You need players of this quality (to win) and the pace that he travels with the ball is something special. He was so selfless and you rely on these first class players”

Abraham also scored against Rennes and Sheffield United ahead of the international break He has four goals in 12 games this season and combines well with Werner, who was widely expected to compete with Abraham for a place in the roster after joining Chelsea from Leipzig this summer

Even scoring a goal from the start didn’t upset Newcastle’s defensive approach, and the hosts only registered a shot on target in the 82nd minute, when Edouard Mendy repelled a deflected shot Isaac Hayden missed Chelsea’s goal earlier after defensive confusion, and a long-range speculative shot from Sean Longstaff bounced off the crossbar and out of play

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce said he was frustrated with his side’s habit of conceding early goals Southampton took the lead after seven minutes in Newcastle’s previous game

“I’m frustrated because we can’t get a result,” said Bruce “I can’t find any excuse but we’ve played three of the top six in the last few weeks It’s been tough but there was a lot of things to like about this second half performance “
