Chelsea boss Frank Lampard singled out Timo Werner for special praise after the German played in his side’s 2-0 win over Newcastle at St James’ Parc
Werner’s second-half push over the halfway line marked his side’s second goal for Tammy Abraham after a goal against his early camp of Federico Fernandez saw the Blues claim a fifth straight victory
Lampard said: “He (Werner) had a few chances and sometimes it doesn’t suit you, but I thought he was a real threat to us all along
“You need players of this quality to win games and the pace at which he moves with the ball is something special. He was so selfless and you rely on these top class players”
As Lampard refuses to get carried away by his team’s increasingly impressive form, he has highlighted their defensive display as another reason they might be in better shape to launch a title challenge.
“It’s good to be in the position we are in, and to have gained confidence from the clean sheets, which gave us a problem earlier this season and parts of last, but we have to keep going to work and be consistent”he said
“The international break was tough, but we came here against a team we lost to last year, we dominated possession and we scored our goals, and we could have scored more”
Magpies boss Steve Bruce lamented his team’s inability to make the most of their opportunities and admitted conceding early goals was becoming a worrying habit
Bruce said: “This is the fifth time we’ve been one down with five or 10 minutes played and we need to deal with it
“We were better in the second half and went higher on the pitch and had some great moments, but unfortunately we couldn’t take one and Chelsea punished us with a bad goal we gave
“I’m frustrated because we can’t get a result I can’t find any excuse but we’ve played three of the top six over the past few weeks It’s been tough but there was a lot to like about this performance in second period “
Bruce has revealed he’s decided not to risk top scorer Callum Wilson due to recent hamstring issues, but is hopeful he will be back with the squad for the busy holiday season.
“I couldn’t risk it today due to the risk of hamstring injury and disappearance for the next six weeks,” said Bruce “We erred in caution and we hope he will be available for us next week
“One of the reasons we bought him was to add us lenses, which he obviously did, and now we have a couple of them to help with this situation, and obviously Callum actually does. part”
