CNN correspondent and Alabama native Kaitlan Collins found herself a target following Friday’s briefing from White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany, her first since debut October

“Thanks everyone for the very good substantive questions,” McEnany said, trying to end the meeting When the group of journalists tried to ask more questions, she briefly returned to the microphone

“I don’t call activists,” McEnany said as he looked at Collins before leaving the catwalk Collins responded, “I’m not an activist,” noting that McEnany had not answered any questions from reporters since October 1 “You just took about five, Kayleigh That doesn’t do your job”

Following the briefing, Collins tweeted: “Appearing in a professional capacity, @PressSec only answered a handful of questions in her first briefing since October 1 When asked why [she] couldn’t not calling all the journalists – given that it had been so long and there aren’t many of us because of social distancing – she called me an ‘activist’ ”

Collins continued, “It’s understandable that a person who hasn’t done their job – answering reporters’ questions – within a few weeks would mistake someone else doing theirs for activism”

Based in Washington, DC, Collins joined CNN in 2017, covering the Trump White House and quickly rising to the top of her field Collins is from Prattville and is a graduate of the University of Alabama She recently spoke to ALcom on the cover of the White House during the COVID-19 pandemic

Appearing in a professional capacity, @PressSec only answered a handful of questions in his first briefing since October 1 When asked why couldn’t call all reporters – considering it had been so long and that there aren’t many of us due to social distancing – she called me an “activist”

We understand why someone who has not done their job – answering journalists’ questions – in a few weeks would mistake someone else doing theirs for activism

Collins’ CNN colleagues and others took to Twitter to defend the reporter after the tense exchange
